TOUR DESCRIPTIONS

Scott’s Company

The Scotts Company tour will involve a tour of the research and development center, new state of the art greenhouses, and turf & ornamental field trials.

The R & D center houses the life support for future product development (biotechnology), and on-going evaluation and testing of current lawn and garden products such as MiracleGro and GrubEx. Field tours will include both turfgrass and ornamental research, which is geared towards professional and consumer products.

The highlight of the tour will be the state of the art greenhouse facility that opened in 2003. This portion of the tour will feature a discussion of how advancements in biotechnology are benefiting this sector of agriculture, from gene insertion into turfgrass or ornamental callus tissue to actual turfgrass plants being evaluated for reduced growth, herbicide resistance, drought tolerance, and extended flower life.

Malabar Farm

Malabar Farm is the former home of Pulitzer Prize winning novelist and the father of the modern conservation movement, Louis Bromfield.  In 1945, Bromfield’s close friends, legendary movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, were married in the Malabar Farm Big House, which is now open for guided tours.  Bromfield’s home, which is still a working farm, was designated as an Ohio State Park in 1976 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic places.  Malabar Farm is located near Mansfield Ohio.
