BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Goals are essentials objectives or outcomes that we actively try to achieve. Goals can be personal in nature, like losing weight, making the varsity team, or doing well in school. Organizations can have goals as well. An example of an organizational goal might be raising a certain amount of funds to conduct programming activities, or trying to win an award for community service. If we want to succeed in life, we need to set achievable goals and strive to reach them. Organizations, in order to be successful, need to do the same thing, although organizational goals are usually developed collectively.

INTEREST APPROACH (5 minutes)

Ask for a couple of volunteers to assist you and have them come to the front of the room. Explain to your volunteers that it is very important that they follow directions closely. Tell your volunteers that they need to get there as quickly as they can. If they ask where, remind them about following directions and repeat that they need to go and get there as quickly as possible. Give them some time to think about it and then ask the rest of the audience what the problem is. Why can't these students be successful? You are looking for the answer, "because they don't know where to go."

TEACHING PLAN / STRATEGY

OBJECTIVE 1 - Determine short term goals(5 minutes)

APPLICATION ACTIVITY -
Activity: Ask your audience the following questions:

  1. How many of them want to be successful?
  2. How many want to have a good job, make money, have nice things, a family that they can take care of?

Ask your group how they plan on getting these things. How do they plan to achieve their goals when they don't know where they're going? Discuss making decisions that will get you where you want to be. Setting goals is essential for success. Goals give you something to strive for. Goals should be attainable. It's good to have long-term goals, as well as short-term goals to serve as benchmarks.

  1. Have your audience share some of their personal goals.
  2. Now have them think of some short-term goals that will help them reach their long-term goals.

OBJECTIVE 2 - Determine steps to achieve short-term goals(5 minutes)

How should you write personal goals?

Step 1: Define your goal
What do you want to achieve?

Step 2: Determine your deadline
A goal without a deadline can be postponed forever. What is your deadline for reaching this goal?

Step 3: Define your purpose
True motivation comes from understanding our purpose. What is your purpose for this goal?

Step 4: Describe the benefits you will get
What are the benefits of reaching this goal?

Step 5: Identify your belief
A goal has to be believable. Unless you really believe that you can reach the goal, you will not have true motivation. What are your beliefs that you can reach this goal?

Step 6: Identify the potential obstacles
Many plans are derailed because people are caught by surprise or hindered by old habits. What can be in the way of reaching your goal?

Step 7: Discover your solutions
How are you going to overcome these obstacles?

Step 8: Visualize; put your imagination to work
Imagine that you have achieved this goal. What is it like? How do you feel?

Step 9: Create action steps
What are the steps of achieving this goal?

APPLICATION ACTIVITY(15 minutes)-

Now work through an example with the group.
Discuss all the steps with the group. Have fun with it. Make it personal. Make it believable. Explain that goals can be for personal reasons or for a group. A group may need to set a goal to raise funds, or a person may set goals to be able to run a marathon. Goal setting is applicable to just about any situation.

SELF-ASSESSMENT -

Now have each person in the group write out a goal for themselves or for their club or organization along with an action plan associated with the goal. At this point it might be helpful to have the handout to help them. Allow them to work individually or in groups or clubs.
