Fans of Bimmerfest are a tightly-knit community. I am a BMW fanatic, and am looking to start a national fraternity of BMW owners who have had a near-death experience in their cars. I hit upon this idea after surviving a sideswipe collision in my BMW 7 Series. The airbag system saved my life, and I will never own any other make of automobile.
Here’s what happened. It was pledge week at SMU, and I was making the rounds at several off-campus fraternities. Needless to say, the beer was flowing, and I have to admit I was a little tipsy when I arrived at Kappa Alpha Phi (KAP). The street surrounding the frat house was clogged with cars, so I parked on the sidewalk along with a bunch of others. This is not unusual in our town. It so happened that the car next to mine was a late model BMW E46, a handsome black model. I locked the car and proceeded to KAP House, where I was interviewed and then allowed to stay and enjoy the refreshments.
Well, people have told me in the past that I shouldn’t drink, because I become belligerent when I overindulge. I cannot confirm this, because I never remember anything after the third beer. So I have had to piece the story together from what others have told me. Apparently, when I left around midnight, I was cursing wildly and looking for a fight (I am never this way when sober). As I approached my car, I saw a couple sitting on my hood. The guy looked like an athlete and I didn’t want to take him on, so I took a swing at his girlfriend instead. This was a serious mistake. The guy slugged me in the stomach and then smashed my head. His girlfriend pulled him off me, otherwise he probably would have killed me, or so I’m told. They get into the black BMW next to mine and start driving off. I guess I was too drunk to know I was hurt, and jumped into my car to follow.
I guess the Irish in me was spoiling for revenge. I caught up with the black car and started honking my horn and ramming his taillights. I knew right away he’d be ordering some replacement BMW E46 parts. He stopped and got out of the car, opened the trunk and grabbed a baseball bat. I guess I realized that I was in mortal danger, so I backed up and started driving away. That’s when the girlfriend scooted into the driver’s seat and started chasing me. Well, to make a long story short, it ended up with her car ramming mine from side. We were both taken to the hospital, and I almost didn’t make it. I somehow pulled through, and I’m sure it was because of the side airbag.
If you’ve had a similar experience, let’s hook up – I think we have the makings of a wonderful fraternity!
