Illinois On April 13, 2006, the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at the University of Illinois held its annual Faculty Dinner. The evening began at 5:00 p.m. by socializing with faculty in the Front Room of the house. The chapter then conducted house tours, and enjoyed a delicious dinner. A number of faculty members selected by brothers of the house based on their individual teaching strategies and skills were in attendance. There were also a few deans from the College of ACES, and the Assistant Dean of Students for the university present at the dinner. At the dinner, the Education Foundation of the house gave out annual scholarships. The Foundation gave away over $10,000 worth of scholarships to the members of the chapter. The Alpha Chapter of AGR showed its true colors this past year at the Greek Excellence Awards by receiving numerous individual and house awards. The many hours that the alumni and undergraduates have spent for the betterment of Alpha Chapter have proven themselves once again. This year the chapter received five individual awards, and took runner-up in four house award categories. First Place honors were given as follows: Greek Man of the Year – Jared Brown; Greek New Member - Vance Knauer; Greek Senior of the Year – Andy Determan; Outstanding Chapter President – Ryan Voorhees; and Greek Advisor of the Year – Tim Roth. The following Second Place honors were given: Excellence in Risk Management, Outstanding House Corporation, Outstanding Chapter, and Excellence in Internal Operations.
Missouri
The Theta Chapter at the University of Missouri has earned their share of recognition this past spring semester. At the 79th Annual University of Missouri Tap Day, held April 22, James Tvrdy and Caleb Colvert were tapped by Mortar Board. James and Caleb are joined in the picture at right by Joe Don McGaugh, and Adviser Leslie Jett (‘96). Joe Don is a 2005 Mortar Board tap, and Leslie is a 2006 Faculty Honor Tap for Mortar Board. The chapter excelled during Greek Week. They received the President’s Cup in recognition of leadership. Individual honors were given to Joe Don McGaugh as the 2006 Greek Week King Finalist. As a member of Royalty’s Sweet Sixteen, Joe Don represented the chapter at numerous events during the Greek Week celebration at Mizzou. Matt Stuever was a Top 30 finalist. Other individual honors were given to chapter members during Greek Week as well. Cory Robinson continues to bring honor to himself and AGR. The Missouri Alumni Association selected him to the prestigious Mizzou ‘39. This honor comes to 39 Mizzou seniors who represent the Spirit of Mizzou! On April 14, he was one of ten students honored by the Missouri Student’s Association as an Unsung Hero. Nominated by Dr. Jan Dauve and three of his Theta brothers, Cory was recognized for, among other things, working with economics students in Dr. Dauve’s microeconomics classes. He also received the Hesburgh Scholarship given to only one member of the senior class that demonstrates the value of their general education in an essay competition. The University of Missouri Department of Student Life recently honored students for Excellence in Leadership. Joe Don McGaugh was one of approximately 40 students at the banquet. He was nominated for the Senior Leadership award. James Tvrdy was one of only five recipients of the Silver Shield of Leadership awards to freshmen and sophomores.
Oklahoma State The Pi Chapter at Oklahoma State University has once again been named the outstanding fraternity house on Oklahoma State University’s campus by the Interfraternity Council (IFC). This is the second consecutive year that Pi Chapter was named outstanding fraternity chapter at OSU. The chapter also placed first in Campus Involvement and Community Service totaling more than 6,000 community service hours for the 2005 calendar year. Pi Chapter was also named First Runner Up in the Campus Relations division. Noble Ruler Blake Bixler was named Outstanding Junior Greek Man. Landscape Architecture Senior Mike Albert was among the top three finalist in the Top Senior Greek Man division. The Pi Chapter of AGR and the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma put on a great show in the 2006 Varsity Revue. AGR and KKG teamed up to bring the Stillwater Campus a show stopping performance entitled: This is the Time to… Get Wild! AGR placed second in the university wide song and dance style performance with their story set in the African Savanna. The production was a culmination of many hours put in by performers and directors alike. Directors for AGR were Rob Pricket, Tyler Smith, Cale Walker and Clayton Smith. Pi Chapter is very excited about the chemistry that they found with Kappa Kappa Gamma and are looking forward to the opportunity to participate in the 2006 Homecoming with these hardworking, talented young women. Pi Chapter also continues to show strong ties to the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources at OSU. Mike Albert and Jess Waddell were selected as Top Five Graduating Seniors. The chapter is proud to boast five of the seven executive positions for the 2006-2007 school year: Cale Walker, President; Tyler Castonguay, Vice President of Business Affairs; Tyler Smith, Vice President of Student Affairs; Austin Horn, Secretary; Clayton Smith, Assistant Treasurer; and Travis Wolff, Student Spokesman. Other individual highlights included Landon Vilhauer being selected to represent the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources in the university wide Student Senate. Weston Dehart, a student in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology was recently named outstanding graduate for his college. Jordan Russell and Weston Dehart make up 40 percent of the outstanding graduates in the Oklahoma State University system. Thanks to all the hard work of the undergraduate brothers, Pi Chapter has held the top spot on campus. Congratulations to these brothers for their service to AGR and OSU.
Florida
The Alpha Gamma Chapter at the University of Florida was able to have three members selected for membership for the collegiate Florida Blue Key. The new members are James Modica, Jacob Raburn, and Kevin Wright. Along with the collegiate Florida Blue Key inducts individuals into membership as an honorary member every spring. Jimmy Cheek was recognized for his leadership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and throughout the campus and nation. Founded in 1923 at the University of Florida, Florida Blue Key is the oldest and most prestigious leadership honorary within the state of Florida. Every year Florida Blue Key sponsors the production of the nation’s largest Homecoming celebration and student run pep rally, Gator Growl. In addition, Florida Blue Key’s Divisions are responsible for producing many events for the university as well as the Florida community. Membership in Florida Blue Key is based on the applicant’s outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, and community service. Members of the chapter who have been honored are pictured with the new members.
Florida Southern The Gamma Alpha Chapter at Florida Southern College made quite a showing at the college’s Second Annual Student Life Awards Reception held April 12, 2006. The new chapter received the Most Improved Fraternity award. The brothers were moved by the fact that all fraternities, sororities, and other organizations in attendance gave them a rousing standing ovation. Advisers Tim Hurner and Malcolm Manners were named Advisors of the Year. Brother Nate Jordan was awarded a Rising Star. These awards are based on letters of nomination submitted by students and faculty. During the fall semester the chapter had the highest G.P.A. among all fraternities at FSC. Our 2.8 G.P.A. was significantly above the other fraternities. Congratulations to the new Gamma Alpha Chapter for your achievements!
