Robert Brunner awarded Distinguished Alumnus Award

Dr. J. Robert Brunner was awarded the distinguished alumnus award for
2002 from Penn State University. The awards ceremony was held April 17-18 in
conjunction with the 2002 Dairy Expo and Little International.
Brunner was initiated into Alpha Gamma Rho in 1937 at Penn State University
and majored in Dairy Manufacturing.
He has devoted his professional career to researching dairy products and the
components of milk, especially the milk proteins and the milk fat globule
membrane. In recognition of these studies he was honored with he Border
Award in Dairy Chemistry by the American Chemical Society in 1964.
As an alumni, Dr. Brunner was closely associated with Chi Chapter during his
MS studies at the University of California - Davis and served as Phi chapter
(Michigan State) adviser during the late 70’s.
Pi Chapter Adviser recognized as Outstanding Teacher of the Year

Dr. Robert L. Oehrtman was recognized on April 20, 2002, at the Annual
Oklahoma Teacher in the Department of Agricultural Economics for the
2001-2002 school year. What makes this award so special is that it is
completely controlled and awarded by students of the Department of
Agricultural Economics. This is not the first time that Dr. Oehrtman has
been recognized for outstanding teaching or advising activities by students
or student organizations. Dr. Oehrtman has received more awards of
recognition from students, student organizations, and youth organizations
than any other Oklahoma State University faculty member. It is very
important to note that Dr. Oehrtman has been recognized by students in the
Department of Agricultural Economics for Outstanding Teaching and Advising
six different times during the past 20 years.
N.C. State
Economist Elected to National Position
Dr. Jon A. Brandt, of North Carolina State University, has been elected
next year’s president of the American Agricultural Economics Association.
During the association’s annual meeting in Long Beach, California (July
28-31), Brandt was elected president -elect. He
will become president at the 2003 annual meeting in Montreal.
The American Agricultural Economics Association, with more than 3,000
members, is a professional society committed to furthering knowledge about
the economics of agriculture, rural communities
and natural resources.
Brandt, who lives in Apex, N.C., has been head of N.C. State’s
Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics since
1991. The department, with 38 faculty members, has 245
undergraduate students and 130 graduate students.
Before coming to N.C. State, Brandt served on the faculty at the University
of Missouri- Columbia and Purdue University. He earned his bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in agricultural economics at The
Ohio State University in 1970. In 1977, he
received a Ph.D., also in agricultural economics, from the
University of California-Davis.
Brandt has written a book, 29 refereed journal articles and more
than 50 extension reports and publications. He also has
advised more than 40 graduate students. Currently, he serves
on the North Carolina Cooperative Council’s board of directors, the national
Experiment Station System Committee on Policy’s social science committee and
the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics board of directors
.
Paul Willis Elected NAADA President Elect
Gainesville, FL – July 29, 2002 – Paul Willis was elected the
President-elect of NAADA at the Association’s annual meeting in Park City,
Utah on June 18, 2002. The National Agricultural Alumni and Development
Association, NAADA, was established in 1975 to help colleges of agriculture
meet the future needs of the American agricultural industry. NAADA is a
non-profit professional association which provides education and support in
alumni relations, development, communications and student services for
professionals, volunteers and student leaders who are dedicated to expanding
the human resources and financial support for land-grant colleges of
agricultural science and related programs.
Mr. Willis is the Director of Student and Alumni Services at the University
of Florida’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He has served on the
NAADA board of directors since 1997 and most recently held the position of
treasurer. Mr. Willis received the Professional Achievement Award in 2000,
which recognizes NAADA members for their significant career activities and
accomplishments as an employee of a NAADA member institution.
Mr. Willis is a resident of High Springs, Florida.

Carl Bradley, Southern Illinois, has joined the Department of
Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University as an Assistant Professor
in April 2002. Carl has a 90% extension and 10% research appointment with
responsibilities in disease management of broadleaf and oilseed crops. He,
his wife, Christine, and son, Curtis Lee, live in Fargo.
Michael R. Toomey, Cal Poly State University, has joined the firm of
Ballenger Cleveland & Issa, LLC. BCI is an institutional-quality firm
committed to providing world class consulting services across a broad array
of disciplines and industries. Toomey will head the Merchant Banking
practice for the firm.
Ralph D. Welsh, Jr., Maryland, received a NASA 40 year service award
on March 19, 2002.
Marc
Paulson, Minnesota has joined Agri Business Group Inc. as business
development manager in Alignment Solutions. Paulson will be responsible for
strategic consulting and market research.
Jason
Kelly, Purdue, is completing his last year of graduate studies at
Purdue, where he is majoring in Veterinary Medicine. Jason was recently
nominated as the new chapter adviser for Delta Chapter (Purdue University).
Kenneth J. Seehusen, Southern Illinois, farms 1,000 acres in north
central Iowa. He also has a futures market consulting business. Seehusen’s
wife is an office manager for Farm Bureau Insurance and they have two sons
who are both engineers.
Timothy A. Micke, Wisconsin - River Falls, has been in education for
19 years -- 15 in agricultural education and four in school administration.
He is still active in agriculture with ownership of 87+ acres of forest/crop
land in Marathon County.
Ryan L. Ludvigson, Iowa State, has joined the staff of Walter &
Associates in Ames, Iowa. He was previously employed with Orion Enterprises.
Chadd M. Garcia, Arizona, began classes at Harvard Business School in
July.
Matthew T. Portillo, California - Davis, received his Ph.D. in
Agricultural Education in May 2002 from Oklahoma State University. He has
accepted a position of Assistant Professor of Agricultural Education at
Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. His wife, Erin, received her
DVM in May 2002 from Oklahoma State University and is an intern at
Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.
Mike Martin and Paul Willis, Florida, were named honorary members in
Florida Blue Key for their outstanding contributions and commitment to UF.
The ceremony was part of the organization’s annual spring banquet in April.
At the annual meeting of the National Agricultural Alumni and Development
Association (NAADA) June 19 in Salt Lake City, Willis was elected
president-elect of the association. He will serve a two-year term as
president-elect before assuming the presidency in 2004.

Sgt. Douglas Irwin, Maryland, was recently promoted to Detective
Sergeant, supervising a street level unit in precinct G. He has two kids;
Sam, 6 and Lauren, 3.
Dr. Mark Kistler, Florida, recently completed his Ph.D. at Texas A&M
University in Agricultural Education and he is now employed as an Assistant
Professor at Texas Tech University in the Department of Agricultural
Education and Communications. He went back to school after ten years with
the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service as a County
Extension Director and Extension Agent.
Kyle McMillan, Illinois, started a new job with ExSeed Genetics as a
NutriDense Sales Manager in April of this year.
John E. Knauff, Maryland, is the business manager of Construction
programs at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics lab.
David Voller, North Dakota State, recently accepted a position with
Den Besten Seed Company, a regional seed and chemical company as a crop
protection division manager.
Brendon Atkinson, Oklahoma State, received a Juris Doctorate Degree
from the University of Oklahoma School of Law on May 11, 2002. Brendon hopes
to return and practice law in Western Oklahoma in the near future.
Dr. Jeffrey A. Wood, Illinois State, has been appointed Associate
Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at Illinois State
University. Dr. Wood has been at ISU for seventeen years. His discipline is
in Agriculture Education where he has served as professor and coordinator.
He has served the department, college and university in many different
capacities over these years. Most recently he chaired the College Committee
that recommended and helped implement a new faculty evaluation system.
Dale Rose, Tennessee - Knoxville, has been elected President of
Tennessee Salers Association. This becomes the third consecutive different
Tennessee Beef Cattle Association he has served as president. Dale is
currently a research Assistant at U.T. Agriculture Experiment Station.
Bret Glendening, Kansas State, is the Program Manager for the League
of Kansas Municipalities. He is also the proud father of a new son, Weston
Alan.
Wayne R. DeBuhr, Wisconsin - Platteville, has joined ABS Global Inc.
as domestic marketing coordinator. DeBuhr will be responsible for working
with the sales management team to service prospective and current customers.
He was previously co-owner of a dairy in Wisconsin.
Charles R. Miller, Wisconsin - Platteville, will celebrate his 25th
wedding anniversary with his wife Jan this year. He has two children Nicole
(20) and Zach (16).
Matthew P. Reidy, Southern Illinois, recently received a promotion
with the Forest Service and moved to Oregon with his family.
Ralph D. Welsh, Jr., Maryland received 40 year NASA service award on
March 19, 2002, for work at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility and Goodard
Spaceflight Center.
Shane Stephens, Oklahoma State, earned the Rotary Ambassadorial
Scholarship and was a Truman Scholar finalist in 2001.
Mark Montgomery, Kentucky is the new softball head coach for
Centenary College, a Division I school is Shreveport, LA. Mark accepted his
new position after a number of successful seasons as softball head coach at
Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY.
John T. Woeste, Kentucky, was inducted in the Florida 4-H hall of
fame on Saturday August 31st. The induction ceremony was part of the
centennial celebration held in ST. Augustine Florida.
James O. Boan, Missouri has written a new book “Rising Sun Sinking --
The Battle for Okinawa.” This book is available on the internet from the
publisher Eakin Press, Austin, TX..n
