Hall of Fame Inductees Recognized at Convention

Charles Thompson, born May 2, 1921, was reared on a cotton and dairy farm near Sayre, Oklahoma. After serving as a B-29 engineer in WWII, he graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1947 and subsequently earned a M.S.A. Degree in Agriculture Economics from Cornell University.

Charles worked two years for the Oklahoma Department of Vocational Agriculture and four years for Braun and Company, a consulting firm. He then began a 35-year career with Merrill Lynch as a broker, office manager and Southwest Regional Director.

A member of Pi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, Mr. Thompson has been active in their alumni association having served as Alumni President. He has served the National AGR Fraternity as a member of the investment committee, ten years as president, and was instrumental in developing a long range of investment strategy for the fraternity’s general funds and foundation.

Charles and his wife Barbara (deceased) are the parents of five children, two daughters and three sons. Mr. Thompson and his wife, Randy, currently reside in Stillwater, Oklahoma.



Warren Nichols was born and reared on the family farm in Osborne County near Afton, Kansas. He was especially active in both 4-H and FFA, graduated valedictorian of his high school class and earned his DVM degree from Kansas State University in 1958.

Warren has been active in the affairs of AGR since his student days at Kansas State. He assisted in the establishment of Beta Delta chapter at Illinois State University and served as its alumni board president for several years. He served the National AGR Fraternity as a member and chairman of the Housing Resources Trust and later was elected to the National Board of Directors where he served as Grand President from 1990-1992. He then served a six-year term on the Educational Foundation Board of Directors and is currently a senior staff consultant for Alpha Gamma Rho.

An Optimist Club member for many years, he served two terms as Lt. Governor of Zone Two and one term as Governor of the Central Southern Illinois District. Dr. Nichols is a past president of the Tri-County Veterinary Medical Association.

Warren and his wife Naomi are the parents of two sons, Brian and Peter, and two daughters, Martha and Angela.


Tom Sutherland, born May 3, 1931, near Falkirk, Scotland, received his B.S. degree in Agriculture from Glasgow University and a Post-Graduate Diploma is 1954 from Reading University. He earned his M.S. and PhD degrees from Iowa State University in Animal Breeding in 1958. He then followed an academic career as Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University for 25 years.

Dr. Sutherland joined Alpha Gamma Rho in 1964 and served as chapter adviser at Colorado State for several years.

Tom has a long history of service to international agriculture. In 1983, he accepted an invitation to serve as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. As he was returning from a visit to the U.S. on June 9, 1985, he was kidnapped by gunmen of the Islamic Jihad. He was held for the next 77 months (2354 days) at various locations in Lebanon. Dr. Sutherland was released on November 18, 1991 along with Terry Waite.

Tom Sutherland currently serves as a consultant on agriculture and international affairs, and is a speaker for the Washington Speakers Bureau. He and his wife, Jean, are the parents of three daughters, Ann, Kit and Joan.


Born in Boise, Idaho, Bill Pope was reared on a general grain and livestock farm near Addison, Michigan. He was active in both 4-H and FFA, involving primarily livestock projects. During WWII, Bill served Uncle Sam as a B-24 bomber pilot. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1947 and subsequently earned his Masters and PhD degrees from Oklahoma State University in animal nutrition.

Dr. Pope’s professional career began as a teacher and researcher at Oklahoma State. From 1968-76 he served as Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, College of Agriculture, Texas A&M University. Beginning in 1976, he served as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at New Mexico State University until his retirement in 1985.

Bill joined AGR as a member of Tau chapter at Michigan State in 1942. He later served as chapter adviser at both Oklahoma and New Mexico State Universities. Dr. Pope assisted in the establishment of the Texas A & M chapter and was their adviser for several years.

Bill and his wife Polly reside at College Station, Texas and are the parents of two sons, Ronald and Thomas and one daughter, Susan.
