the January Adviser Forum
by Kirby Barrick, Adviser Forum Facilitator
Each January and June, a several AGRs meet in Kansas City to
participate in an AGR Advisers Forum. A
typical list of participants would include several relatively new chapter advisers, a few
alumni board presidents, and one or two other fraternity leaders including RVPs and new
home office staff. The purpose of the forum
is to instill confidence to implement the techniques of participative leadership, and to
set priority goals and objectives for improvement over the next 24 months.
The forum is not a ten-steps-to-success approach. Instead, participants focus on identifying their
leadership skills and style, and then participate in activities to help determine how
their skills and style can be used effectively to manage change in working with
undergraduate chapters and alumni groups. Feedback
indicates that participants especially appreciate the opportunity to delve into real-life
fraternity issues and gain perspectives from others regarding how those issues might be
addressed. Participants also learn more about
fraternity programs and how they can make local programming more successful.
