New Beef Teaching Laboratory and Meats Laboratory Named in
Honor of Xi Chapter Alumni
Tuesday, April 26 was a day to remember as the new Beef Teaching Unit and
Meats Laboratory were dedicated at Auburn University. The facilities are
state of the art and contain modern holding pens, labs, classrooms, offices
and an environment in which students and faculty may study cattle and other
animals important to Alabama’s economy.
Dr. Stanley P. Wilson, Auburn,
formerly vice president for agriculture at Auburn University, and an
accomplished geneticist and expert in the beef cattle industry, contributed
many hours of hard work and personal contributions in making the Beef
Teaching Unit a reality. Not only did he ardently support the new facility
but he donated his registered Black Angus beef cattle herd to the university
when he and his wife, Barbara, moved back to Auburn to retire. As Dr. Gale
Buchanan stated during his remarks at the dedication, “Dr. Wilson is a
principled individual from whom I have learned during my career.” So, it is
fitting indeed that the facility be dedicated as the Stanley P. Wilson Beef
Teaching Unit. Dr. Wilson became a member of the Xi Chapter in 1951. He
serves as president of the Xi Chapter Educational Foundation Board. Wilson
is honored as an Alpha Gamma Rho Brother of the Century.
Dr. Billy Powell, Auburn,
Executive Vice President of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, who
continues as a strong leader and spokesman for the beef cattle industry,
also lobbied extensively for the bond issue that resulted in these
facilities coming to fruition. Dr. Powell related many events that finally
resulted in passage of a legislative bond issue to support these new
facilities. Dr. Powell became a member of the Xi Chapter in 1963. Powell has
been a strong supporter of the chapter for many years. He was also honored
as a Brother of the Century.
The late Earnest Lambert was
known throughout Alabama and the southeast for his leadership in developing
the beef cattle industry. His breeding expertise in beef cattle circles was
well known. Mr. Frank Lambert, who became a member of the Xi Chapter at
Auburn in 1967 and nephew of Mr. Earnest Lambert, represented the Lambert
family at the dedication of the Lambert-Powell Meats Laboratory.
Congratulations to brothers
Wilson, Powell, and Lambert for their contributions, and the contributions
of their families!
